Having a pool in your apartment community is one of the great luxuries of renting -- no maintenance, no chemical balancing, no leaf skimming. Just grab a towel and go. But there's an art to apartment pool living.
Pool Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules
"No glass containers" means it. Broken glass shuts down the pool for hours. Bring drinks in cans, plastic tumblers, or a Yeti. The Yeti also keeps your drink cold for three hours in Texas heat.
Music: Nobody wants to hear your Bluetooth speaker. Use AirPods or keep the volume at "I can hear it from my chair but my neighbor can't."
Saving chairs: Putting your towel on a chair and disappearing for two hours is the apartment pool equivalent of parking in two spaces. 30 minutes, then your chair is fair game.
The Gear That Actually Matters
A Turkish cotton pool towel ($15-25). A waterproof phone case ($10). Sunglasses that float (Knockaround or Rheos, $25-35). A 32-oz insulated water bottle. That's it.
The Totally Subjective Sunscreen Rankings
Best overall: Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40. Goes on clear, doesn't feel greasy. $22 but you'll actually wear it.
Best value: Banana Boat Sport Ultra SPF 50. Under $10 at Target, holds up in water. It smells like sunscreen. Accept it.
Best for Arizona: EltaMD UV Sport SPF 50. Doesn't run into your eyes when you sweat. Survives extreme sun. $30 but your skin at age 50 will justify it.
Best mineral: Blue Lizard Sensitive SPF 50+. No white cast. Reef-safe.
The one to avoid: Any spray sunscreen applied without regard for wind direction. If you're downwind of someone spraying Coppertone at an apartment pool, you know the exact flavor of aerosol SPF 30.
Timing Is Everything
Early morning (7-9am): Pool is empty. Water is cool. Sun is gentle. The secret window that regulars guard jealously.
Weekday lunch (11am-1pm): If you work from home, this is your power move. A 30-minute pool break resets your brain better than any meditation app.
Golden hour (5:30-7pm): Sun drops, heat eases, pool gets that warm evening glow. This is the social hour. Drinks appear, conversations happen. The apartment community bonding time.
Avoid: Saturday 1-4pm in peak summer. Every chair will be taken, and the vibes are competitive rather than relaxing.
After the Pool
Rinse off before you go back. Chlorine dries your skin and stains furniture. If your dog greets you and starts licking the chlorine off your legs (they will), rinse your legs first. Dogs and chlorine aren't a great combo.
Pool season runs roughly April through October. That's seven months of free, steps-from-your-door aquatic recreation. Your gym membership can't compete.
