Before You Move (2-4 Weeks Out)

Give notice at your current placeCheck your lease for the required notice period. Most need 30-60 days.
Set up utilities transferElectric, gas, water. Call them early because everyone else is also moving this month.
Get renter's insuranceCosts less than your streaming subscriptions combined. Seriously, it's like $15-$30/month.
Forward your mail at USPS.comTakes 5 minutes online. Future you will be very grateful.
Update your address (banks, subscriptions, employer)Don't forget the weird ones: dentist, vet, voter registration, that one loyalty card.
Schedule movers or reserve a truckEnd of month is peak. Book early or pay the "procrastination premium."
Start packing room by roomLabel every box. "Misc stuff" is not a helpful label. Ask us how we know.
Set up internet service at your new placeSchedule the install for move-in day if you can. No Wi-Fi = no chill.

Moving Day

Do a final walkthrough of your old place (photos!)Document everything. Your security deposit will thank you.
Check in with your leasing officeThey're expecting you. They're happy to see you. They have paperwork.
Get your keys and parking pass
Test all light switches and outletsThe one time you skip this is the one time something's off.
Check water pressureTrust us, you want to know this before your first shower.
Take photos of the unit's conditionEvery wall, every floor, every fixture. This is your move-in record.

First Week

Meet your neighborsEven just a wave in the hallway counts. Gold star if you learn a name.
Locate the nearest grocery storeAnd the nearest "fancy" grocery store for when you're feeling like a grown-up.
Find your mailboxIt's usually near the leasing office. Your leasing team will point you to it.
Download the maintenance request appYour leasing office will set you up. Bookmark it. You'll use it.
Explore the amenity spaces (pool, fitness center, coworking)You're paying for them. Use them. The pool doesn't judge.
Set up your Wi-Fi and test every roomDead zones happen. Better to find them now than during a video interview.
Find the nearest coffee shop (essential)This is not optional. This is infrastructure.

Register for resident eventsFree food, free drinks, and you might actually make a friend. Win-win-win.
Meet the on-site team by nameThey're the people who make things work. Knowing their names goes a long way.
Check out the dog parkEven if you don't have a dog. It's good for the soul. (And great for meeting people.)
Learn the guest parking policyBefore your parents visit. Not during. Trust the process.
Set up your resident rewards accountPoints for paying rent? Yes, that's a real thing.

Nice-to-Have First Month

Explore your neighborhood on footYou'll find things Google Maps doesn't know about. Probably.
Find a backup parking spotFor when your regular spot is taken and you need a Plan B.
Locate nearest urgent careHopefully you won't need it. But future you will be glad present you looked it up.
Join local community groupsFacebook groups, Nextdoor, neighborhood Slack. Pick your flavor.
Write a review (help future neighbors find their home too)Google, Apartments.com, wherever. Your experience helps someone else decide.

When should I start preparing for my apartment move?

Start at least 2-4 weeks before your move date. This gives you time to set up utility transfers, get renter's insurance, forward your mail, update your address with banks and employers, and book movers or a truck. Last-minute moves are stressful -- a little planning goes a long way.

Yes. Renter's insurance is required at Luxia communities. The good news: it typically costs less than your streaming subscriptions combined -- usually between $15-$30 per month. It covers your personal belongings, liability, and additional living expenses if something happens. Your leasing office can recommend providers.

What should I do on my first day at a new apartment?

Check in with your leasing office, get your keys and parking pass, do a walkthrough of your unit (test light switches, outlets, water pressure), and take photos of the unit's condition. Document everything before you unpack -- it protects both you and the community.

How do I submit a maintenance request at Luxia?

Luxia communities use a resident portal or app for maintenance requests. Your leasing office will help you set this up during check-in. You can submit requests 24/7, and emergency maintenance is available around the clock. Meet your maintenance team early -- they're good people and they're fast.
