From DFW Communities (1 Hour or Less)
Granbury (1 hour southwest of Fort Worth): Historic courthouse square, antique shops, soda fountain at Rinky Tink's. Brazos River kayaking. Granbury Theatre Company does Broadway-quality shows. Your dog is welcome at the lakefront park.
Lake Grapevine (30-40 min): Northshore Trail (9-mile out-and-back with lake views), paddleboard rentals. Historic downtown Grapevine: wine tasting rooms, Grapevine Vintage Railroad, Main Street Bread Baking Company.
Denton (45 min north): Recycled Books (massive used bookstore in a converted opera house). LSA Burger Co. Live music that punches above its weight. Your dog is welcome at basically every patio.
Dinosaur Valley State Park (1 hour southwest): Real 113-million-year-old dinosaur tracks in a riverbed. The Paluxy River is wadeable in summer. Dogs allowed on leash.
From Phoenix Communities (1 Hour or Less)
Sedona (1 hour 45 min -- bending the rule, worth it): Red rock formations, world-class hiking (Cathedral Rock, Devil's Bridge). Elote Cafe (corn ribs are famous for a reason). Dogs allowed on most trails.
Tortilla Flat (1 hour east): Population: 6. Tiny stagecoach stop on the Apache Trail. Saloon serves chili and burgers, walls covered in dollar bills. The drive along Canyon Lake is one of the most scenic in the Valley.
Lake Pleasant (45 min northwest): Kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming beaches. Scorpion Bay Marina rents boats. Pack a cooler, get there by 9am.
From Nashville Communities (1 Hour or Less)
Franklin (30 min south): Regularly voted one of the best small towns in America. Puckett's for brunch, Gray's on Main for cocktails. Harpeth River Greenway has 7 miles of trails.
Natchez Trace Parkway (starts 20 min south): Just the first 30-mile stretch is restorative. Stop at the Birdsong Hollow overlook and Leiper's Fork village.
Arrington Vineyards (40 min south): Owned by Kix Brooks. Rolling hills, mountain views, live music weekends. Bring a blanket and a picnic.
From OKC Communities (1 Hour or Less)
Turner Falls Park (1.5 hours south): Oklahoma's tallest waterfall (77 feet) with swimming holes. The drive through the Arbuckle Mountains is scenic. Go early in summer.
Guthrie (30 min north): Oklahoma's original state capital. Victorian-era brick downtown. The Blue Belle Saloon is an 1903 bar that looks like a Western movie set.
Lake Thunderbird (25 min south): Beaches, sailing, hiking trails. On fall weekends when the leaves change, the trail around the lake is one of the prettiest walks in the metro.
