The Vibe

McKinney feels like a place that read the "best suburbs in America" listicles and then just... became one. Craig Ranch, the massive master-planned community on the city's east side, is all wide sidewalks, HOA-maintained everything, and a fitness culture that borders on competitive. You'll see more joggers per capita here than anywhere in Collin County.

But McKinney isn't just Craig Ranch. Historic Downtown McKinney — centered around the 1876 courthouse square — has evolved into one of the best small-town downtowns in Texas. Independent boutiques, craft cocktail bars, a genuinely great Thai restaurant next to a genuinely great BBQ spot. It's walkable, it's charming, and on Saturday mornings the farmers market takes over Chestnut Square.

The trade-off? You're going to drive. Walk Score sits around 38, and that's being generous for the Craig Ranch side. But the trade is space, quiet, excellent schools, and the kind of neighborhood where your dog will have more friends than you do. McKinney is growing fast — the population has roughly tripled since 2000 — but it still has that slightly-slower pace that people move to Collin County for. The commute to Legacy West or downtown Plano runs 15–20 minutes. Downtown Dallas is 40–45 on a good day. Remote workers, this might be your sweet spot.

Dining & Coffee

Rick's Chophouse — White-tablecloth steakhouse in a restored 1800s building downtown. The kind of place where you celebrate things.
Harvest Seasonal Kitchen — Farm-to-table with a patio that makes you forget you're in a suburb. The seasonal menu actually changes seasonally.
Cadillac Pizza Pub — Relocated from a gas station to downtown. The pizza is still excellent. The vibe is still weird. We love it.
Patina Green Home & Market — Part cafe, part interior design store. The sandwiches are enormous and the iced lavender latte is the reason half of Craig Ranch gets out of bed.
Local Yocal BBQ — Whole-animal butcher shop with a BBQ counter. The brisket is competitive with anything in the DFW sprawl.
Sugarbacon Proper Kitchen — Brunch institution. The chicken and waffles draw a crowd, but the chilaquiles are the sleeper hit.
Layered Coffee — Third-wave coffee in Craig Ranch. Good pour-overs, better pastries, and enough outlets for your laptop.

Tom Thumb at Craig Ranch — Your everyday grocery run. Right off Custer Road.
Kroger Marketplace — The big one on Eldorado. Full grocery plus home goods.
Natural Grocers — For the organic crowd. Smaller but well-curated.
Costco McKinney — Opened 2023 on Highway 75. Finally, bulk shopping without driving to Plano.
McKinney Farmers Market — Saturdays at Chestnut Square, April through November. Local produce, tamales, honey, and kettle corn.

Parks & Recreation

Bonnie Wenk Park — 76 acres of trails, playgrounds, sports fields, and one of the best dog parks in Collin County. The off-leash area is huge and shaded. Your pup will thank you.
Craig Ranch Fitness Trail — A paved loop connecting Craig Ranch neighborhoods. Runners, cyclists, and the occasional speed-walking book club.
Erwin Park — Mountain biking trails that are legitimately challenging. Also great for hiking. About 10 minutes north of Craig Ranch.
Towne Lake Recreation Area — Fishing, kayaking, and a walking trail around the lake. Bring your own kayak or rent one.
Adriatica Village — Not technically a park, but this Mediterranean-inspired development along a canal has walking paths, a chapel, and a bell tower. Absurdly photogenic. Dog-friendly.
