Neighborhood Guide: Plano & Legacy West, TX

Plano used to be 'the suburb where your parents moved.' Now it's the suburb where Toyota, JPMorgan Chase, and Liberty Mutual moved — and brought their employees, their restaurants, and a food hall that rivals anything in Dallas proper. Legacy West is the epicenter, and it's surprisingly walkable for a place built around a highway.

The Vibe

Legacy West changed the game for Plano. What was once a corporate office park corridor along the Dallas North Tollway has become a genuine mixed-use district with high-end retail, upscale dining, and enough happy hour options to fill every evening of the week. Toyota's North American headquarters sits right here, and the ripple effect on the restaurant scene has been enormous.

But Plano beyond Legacy West is worth knowing too. West Plano is leafy, quiet, and firmly in the "great schools, great parks" camp. Downtown Plano — yes, it exists — has a charming stretch of restaurants and shops along 15th Street, anchored by a DART station that gives you a straight shot to downtown Dallas without touching a highway.

The Shops at Legacy, just east of Legacy West, adds another layer — a slightly more casual, more bar-and-grill vibe compared to Legacy West's upscale polish. Between the two, you could eat at a different restaurant every night for three months and never repeat.

Nature lovers have Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, which is the rare suburban park that actually feels like you escaped the city. It's 200 acres of unpaved trails through old-growth forest, with an observation tower that gives you a panoramic view of the suburbs pretending to be wilderness. Dogs are welcome on certain trails, and they will try to chase the occasional deer. They will fail.

Dining & Coffee

Legacy Hall — A 55,000-square-foot food hall with two dozen vendors. From ramen to Texas BBQ to craft cocktails on the rooftop. This is where indecisive friend groups go to be happy.
Haywire — Upscale Texas cuisine in Legacy West. The chicken-fried lobster is exactly as ridiculous and delicious as it sounds.
Whiskey Cake — Farm-to-table with a killer brunch and a whiskey list that requires its own table of contents. The patio is dog-friendly.
Toulouse Cafe and Bar — French bistro vibes at The Shops at Legacy. The croque madame and the people-watching are equally excellent.
Eatzi's Market & Bakery — Part deli, part bakery, part 'I'll just grab dinner here because it's amazing.' The rotisserie chicken is a neighborhood staple.
Lockhart Smokehouse — Serious Central Texas BBQ. The sausage links are the move. Cash or card, no attitude.
Ascension Coffee — Specialty coffee roaster with a gorgeous Legacy West location. The cold brew is dangerously smooth.
Bavette's Bar & Boeuf — The Chicago steakhouse import. Dark, moody, and the kind of place where you order dessert even though you're full.

Groceries & Essentials

Whole Foods Legacy — Right on Legacy Drive. The hot bar is a weeknight dinner backup plan for the entire neighborhood.
Central Market Plano — The Texas-born grocery that makes shopping feel like a culinary adventure. Exceptional produce and cheese section.
H Mart — Pan-Asian supermarket on Old Denton Road. Essential for anyone who takes their cooking seriously.
Tom Thumb — Multiple locations. Reliable, well-stocked, and they do grocery delivery.
Costco West Plano — Off the Tollway. The gas alone is worth the membership.

Parks & Recreation

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve — 200 acres of unpaved trails through old-growth forest. The observation tower on the west ridge is worth the climb. Off-leash dog area on the east side — bring water, it gets warm.
Bob Woodruff Park — 100+ acres with a lake, sports fields, and paved trails. The go-to spot for family picnics and Saturday morning runs.
Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve — 800 acres along Rowlett Creek. Mountain biking, hiking, and a disc golf course that's harder than it looks.
Legacy West Dog Park — A small but well-maintained urban dog park within the Legacy West development. Ideal for a quick after-work romp.
Chisholm Trail — A paved multi-use trail connecting parks across Plano. Great for cycling.
